Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is progressive loss of muscle control, which leads to trembling of the limbs and head while at rest, stiffness, slowness, and impaired balance.

  • It is caused by a lack of dopamine.
  • The disease is inherited
  • It is more common in elderly age (More than 60 Years)
  • It affects men more than women
  • Head trauma, illness, or exposure to environmental toxins such as pesticides and herbicides may be a risk factor
  • Nowadays many young patients as early as in thirties and forties are being diagnosed with it.

The diagnosis


  • At least two of the three major symptoms are present (tremor at rest, muscle rigidity, and slowness).
  • Onset of symptoms started on one side of the body.
  • Symptoms are not due to secondary causes such as medication or strokes in the area controlling movement.
  • Symptoms are significantly improved with levodopa.

Some useful tips for Parkison's Disease

  • It is very important to take your medicines regularly as advised.
  • Regular follow-up is very essential as your doctor needs to modify your doses according to your condition.
  • Think positive as negative thinking may progress the disease.
  • Regular exercise is must.
  • Wear anti skid shoes or slippers, preferably with hard sole.
  • Wear clothes with buttons in front. If it is difficult to fasten buttons, use Velcro tape.
  • Use stick while walking, if there is problem in balancing.
